Even before the envelopes are opened and the names are called at the 58th Annual Tony Awards, Vari-Lite is already a big winner. Designers for each of the four shows nominated for "Best Lighting Design" used automated lighting comprised predominantly - if not exclusively - of VARI*LITE® fixtures.
For "Assassins," Peggy Eisenhauer and Jules Fisher used 24 VL1000AS luminaires, three VL1000A fixtures and nine VL2000 Spot luminaires.
Lighting designer Brian MacDevitt has two shows among the four nominees, "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Henry IV." MacDevitt created the look for "Fiddler" with 55 VARI*LITE automated fixtures - 24 VL3000 Spot luminaires, 15 VL3000 Wash luminaires, 10 VL1000TS fixtures and 6 VL1000AS units. On Henry IV, MacDevitt positioned 26 VL2000 Wash fixtures to create specific looks and colors.
Ken Posner's "Wicked" design was created with 22 VL2000 Spot luminaires, 16 VL2000 Wash units and 13 VL3000 Spot fixtures.
The official winners will be announced June 6 during a live CBS broadcast from Radio City Music Hall.
